For the past 3 and half decades I have been actively involved in the women’s movement of Rajasthan. I have also been associated with filling of the public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court and in the Rajasthan High Court. One of the most popularly known PIL was signed by me in the Supreme Court of India on behalf of Vishakha for the prevention of sexual harassment of women at the workplace. Supreme Court gave a land mark judgment which is also known as Vishakha guidelines.

In the year 1972, I took up my first job in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, University of Rajasthan. I worked as the Assistant Editor, Prasar, a quarterly bilingual journal of this department. Till 1984 I worked there in different capacities. I conducted trainings and capacity building of Adult literacy functionaries, Preparing Adult Literacy Materials and Primers for Neo Literates, supervising Adult Literacy Centers, helping in the organisation of various hobby classes and other extension programs. During this time I was also involved actively in the activities of Rajasthan University Women’s Association (RUWA) a group actively involved in combating on violence against women cases. Some of the most popularly known cases of RUWA are Asha Rani Dowry murder case, Kotputli Rape case of mentally retarded women at the Kotputli Police Station and a three marriage case by giving false information.

In the year 1984,I resigned from the University to join the Women’s Development Program initiated by the GOR, as State IDARA coordinator. I continued there till 1990. I was responsible for trainings, monitoring material production and information dissemination. In 1987 I was in the leadership role in Roop Kanwar widow burning case. Protest movement started from Rajasthan soon became a National movement. It resulted in the enactment of Sati Prevention Act. From 1990 to 1993 a group of us leaving WDP started Vishakha Sanstha. During this period I got actively involved in anti rape movement started as a result of Bhateri Gang Rape case. This resulted in the Supreme Court land mark judgement. The court issued guidelines to prevet Sexual harasment of women at the work place. In Vishakha I was part of the team conducting residential literacy courses for women and girls. I also started editing a News Paper called Ujala Chhadi for people with low level of Literacy. In 1998 Vividha Women’s Documentation and Resource Center came into being. Here we are working for Women’s Empowerment, Documentation, capacity building and networking. In 2001 Vividha News and Feature Service started. We conducted several Rural Journalists trainings in various parts of Rajasthan and started a Rural Media Resource Center in Baran district of Rajasthan in collaboration with Sankalpa and Doosra Dashak Baran.

In 2006 my book on the history of Women’s Movement of Rajasthan was published by Rajkamal Prakashan, New Delhi. I have also received several awards and fellowships. Two of them are NFI Fellowship in 1996 and Sarojini Naidu Award in 2002, for best journalistic article on Panchayati Raj Women in Hindi.
